Take time for yourself Day 4.

One of the things most of us neglect is spending time in our own company. Whether you are a student, a busy mother to young kids, a working professional or a senior citizen, we're mostly surrounded by people who we live with or our co-workers.
If you live  alone, all by yourself chances are once you get home, you spend time with the television. Rare is the person who spends time by themselves. I for one, highly recommend it. As a writer, for me it is a occupational NEED. If I don't get my alone time I would probably be very irked.

In my home, I have a mediation room with a  bamboo water fountain (which my son and I made.). I ensure that I meditate at least four -five times a week.Even if you do not meditate, take some time out for yourself. Create a 'happy corner' in your home which is just for you. Make it a point to spend some time in that 'happy corner' doing whatever gives you joy. But do this by yourself. Let your family members know that this is YOUR time. If you are a student living in the hostel, escape to the library and create some 'ME time' for yourself.

I have found that this practice helps me a lot in gaining perspective, reflecting about things, slowing down and remembering to be grateful for all that I have.

Do you do this too? Do you have a happy corner in your house? Do you get time by yourself?
Let me know in my comment box; I would love to know.

  3. YES! Cannot stress this more. I don't have a happy corner in my house, but plenty of spots where I get my quiet and space. My long runs are also therapy, its quite simply focusing on the breathing, putting one step in front of the other, and simply being with myself. Love this post!

  4. Mornings and my journal writing time are my solo me time.. My husband n now my toddler is also understanding that when mama is writing my diary noone can disturb her in her room. I like the fact that my husband respects this time of mine... Running, writing are ways i find to introspect or reflect on recent happenings. I carry my diary everywhere i go.. Be it business trips or vacations..

  6. Such a wonderful suggestion Ma'am. I have my me-time during my meditation. It is such a constructive process. Also, I want to thank you for such inspirational writing, both in your books and the blogs. In fact I share what I read here with my mother and entire family too. They also love it. Thank you so much.

  7. My room is the place where I have my ME time. I either sit and write in my journal, or read a book on my Kindle. When I am there, no one else will enter and sit with me. They know that I want to be myself, so it's nice to spend some time relaxing and not being around anyone. On Sunday afternoons, I like to take the mandatory nap after a sumptuous lunch! :-)

  9. Yes of course an individual needs typical " my space" and really i spend most of "my time" in reading some books specially "Preeti Shenoy's" books. After that I sit for long on the terrace floor and spend most of the time questioning myself about the things i am irked by and this generally helps me in living a satisfied life. One thing i would like to share with everyone is that onr must try to sit on the floor which is not too clean, not covered by some carpet or anything. Sometime the dust on the floor removes the dust of ego and unnecessary attitude from our eyes. Sometimes it feels that we are close to our mother earth, our soil and our land. A feeling one is always proud of.

  10. Hi Preeti,

Another very relevant article. I do this every single day - for a very short time though. My morning tea time is mine where I just sip tea and mentally plan for the day. Also in the evening too, I come home a bit early and get a precious few moments before I get back online. Me time keep you sane and grounded ~ Indu.

  11. Hi Preeti Di,
I would like to share a very funny incident with you. When I was in college and everything was getting hectic for me I decided to spend some time alone and so for the first time, I just went out alone to the nearby garden to get some peace for myself. As, my family wasn't used to it they all got so tensed that when I returned home they bombarded me with questions and ample amount of tension. Then I had to make them sit and tell them that I need some alone time for myself.
It took time for them to understand, but gradually, they realized my need and accepted it.
