Change (Blog marathon post 7)

“Things change. And friends leave. Life doesn't stop for anybody.”
― Stephen Chbosky, The Perks of Being a Wallflower

This morning I was thinking about change. Change is the only constant thing in life. I guess this is true for every one. Take yourself to 18th June 2008--basically, rewind your life,  five years back and answer these questions:

  1. What were you doing ?
  2. Who were your closest friends? Are they still in your life with the same closeness?
  3. Where were you living?
  4. Were you more satisfied and content then than you are now? Why or why not?

If I were to answer it, my answers would be as follows:

1. I had just written my first article for Readers Digest and was very pleased about it. I was elated to be published by a magazine of such repute and stature. It was a dream come true.

2. My closest friends of that period --they aren't that close to me anymore. I am still in touch with them--but it is an ocassional 'hello--how are you'. Their lives have taken them in a different direction and I have gone in a completely different direction; (Things change, Friends leave).

3. I was living in Pune at that time

4. No--I am definitely more content and happier now, because I am so much more successful and well-known today, than I was back then.

Today I had a long and a very enriching conversation with a  fellow-author and a good friend Ravi Subramanian. (The best-selling author of Bankster,  If God was a Banker  and three more books). It was wonderful to talk about writing and other stuff.

After I hung up, I sat for a very long time, thinking about how authors are now my good friends  and how much my life has changed.

Then a quote from a movie came to my head. It was so relevant, so apt and made so much sense that I had to share it with you.

“For what it’s worth: it’s never too late or, in my case, too early to be whoever you want to be. There’s no time limit, stop whenever you want. You can change or stay the same, there are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. And I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things you never felt before. I hope you meet people with a different point of view. I hope you live a life you’re proud of. If you find that you’re not, I hope you have the courage to start all over again.”
― Eric Roth, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button screenplay

I think every now and then, we ought to pause and explore our options. We ought to assess our opportunities and  we should think about whether the path we have taken will get us towards our goal. We may not always stick to the path--after all life is so darn unpredicatble.

But I do believe that if you go through life, without much thinking about what you want from it, then you grow old quickly.

Change--Pursue it, Woo it and Make it your own. It is hard in the beginning--but oh the rewards!
And may all success be yours.

    2. Some of my friends are still there...and they are more closer to me now. Some have moved away.

    3. I was living in the same place :)

    4. Much more happier and content now - the kids had not happened then :).

It was good to pause and reflect while reading your post.

  8. Hey Preeti,

Looking back is at time fun isnt it?

What were you doing ? - In College. Either playing Fifa/Call of Duty as preparations for exams or was actually taking an exam!! :D

Who were your closest friends? Are they still in your life with the same closeness? - Some are still close, but most have drifted apart, but still in touch via FB.

Where were you living? - Kasaragod. :)

Were you more satisfied and content then than you are now? Why or why not? As i was in College, without a care about the world and how to earn a living or even thinking about career or money etc i guess i was more satisfied and content then. But a year or two earlier and now, am more more satisfied and content than then.

This brought some wonderful and painful memories back. Probably need to call someone from the old life and have a nice long chat..

    Cheers
    Shantharam

  10. This is an awesome post!!!

    What were you doing ?
I was in college, doing B.tech, writing my 4th semester exams and waiting for the 5th semester classes to start.

Who were your closest friends? Are they still in your life with the same closeness?
I had 3 close friends. We had a great time!! But now only one of them remains close. I have some contact with the other two but haven't talked to them in weeks.

    Where were you living?
I was living in the same place, but in a week I'm moving to a new place, new city, new job and new life!! I love changes :)

Were you more satisfied and content then than you are now? Why or why not?
I'm content with my life more than before, because I have grown up so much, learned so much, accepted so much and I believe life only gets better with age.

  13. Our life changes with time and so does others lives too. Some friends remain with us while some drift afar to find other friends while some come into our life. This cycle is natural and will continue and change is constant. Nice post Preeti Shenoy.

  15. Lot indeed has changed.
My BFF is still the same and we believe we'll be so forever. I'm still in touch with most others whom I was close with .
I was in a different city.
I was content back then. Lot has improved in these 5 years which by itself has paved way for more demands. I used to be blissfully ignorant about my life and career back then, which explains why I was content. But, I like the present -- the constant desire to improve, persist.

The last line is very inspiring. Much needed dose of inspiring words.
There's a famous quote by Charles Darwin which I came across, "It's not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives, it's the one that is most adaptable to change"
