Tyler Durden

I haven’t seen ‘Fight club’ though it has been on my list. Yet, I can relate to certain parts of Tyler Durden. Especially when he says

“Man, I see in fight club the strongest and smartest men who've ever lived. I see all this potential, and I see squandering. God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need. We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off.”

Or when the voice-over says “This is your life and it's ending one minute at a time.”

That is when I feel a bit sentimental. And I remember, that sometimes some people touch you in a way, that you find hard to explain. Words fail me when I try, and to express myself, I create pictures.
Today was one such day. My friend Tyler Durden [the blogger—not the movie hero :-)] sent me a lovely song yesterday. It has been playing in my head ever since.

We had an interesting conversation today. I don’t remember the exact words he said, but he talked about his heart not being in it anymore. I was moved. Beyond words. So, I created this mixed media painting-collage. And yes, the foetal guy curled up inside the bottle, symbolizes my friend.

  1. It's great that you have other forms of expression besides words, it looks good!
I liked that quote too, it's very 'today'!

  3. I wasn't crying... I was actually happier than ever - because it worked. The endless ramblings about pain and sorrow will get you this sort of response from people around you - which is why there is pleasure in pain.

@niall - thanks for your comment, i probably didn't understand it too well. and help? can anyone really help you find your way? isn't that the only thing you do on your own?

  5. Hi Ps, Thanks for visiting my site, I am glad that you liked the poem. I guess sometimes life makes you so helpless that you have no other choice but to remain a silent spectator. Do tell me abt the similar poem that u wrote.

  6. I love the painting. There is definite passion shown on the canvas.
I like the quote you posted. The words ring true.
We've been so brainwashed to believe that our self-worth is measured by how much stuff we own and not by what we do or what kind of person we are.
It's so sad. It is destroying humanity.

  7. Your picture is very moving and has a great feeling of mood for me.

Fight Club is one of my favourite movies. It is not the most comfortable film to watch though, but it did speak to me and the passage you quote is so on the button! So many people trying to make their way, trying to find a purpose, trying to make sense of it all (we have all been there and no doubt some of us will constantly question things), adn sometimes life does not live up ot the expections we set or those that we are told we have a right to expect.

It is interesting that you mention expressing yourself through pictures instead of words. I recently did a course as part of my MBA on creativity and change. A central idea of this course was that we can unlock new ideas and new approaches to problem solving by using different media that utilise different parts of the brain. And it really works.

You put a smile on my brother's face. Thanks...he means the world to me. I hate not being there to see him through his confusions and I'm glad he has friends who care.
