A box of colours

Life is like a box of crayons (or oil pastels or whatever you want to call them). Most people are the 8-color boxes, but what you're really looking for are the 64-color boxes with the sharpeners on the back. I fancy myself to be a 64-color box, though I've got a few missing. It's ok though, because I've got some more vibrant colors like periwinkle at my disposal. I have a bit of a problem though in that I can only meet the 8-color boxes. Does anyone else have that problem? I mean there are so many different colors of life, of feeling, of articulation.. So when I meet someone who's an 8-color type.. I'm like, "hey girl, magenta!" and she's like, "oh, you mean purple!" and she goes off on her purple thing, and I'm like, "no - I want magenta!"”
---- John Mayer

Most of us look for what we want in the other person. Then we feel disappointed because we expected Magenta and got a Purple. Sometimes you realize it early in the relationship. If it matters too much, you might still want to look for that Magenta. But if there are other colours that you want, then you might compromise and settle for the purple. Sometimes you don’t even realize it and you wonder why you are vaguely dissatisfied.

Sometimes, you find the magenta but still keep looking. That is why it is important to pause and take stock .Very important. Because as each second ticks, life is passing by.

  1. I don't think we know what we are looking for until we find it - sometimes we think we want magenta but what we actually need is a purple! I also think that some people are more colourful than others - when you get to know someone they can turn out to haev all these layers of colour adn yet others can seem duller and less colourful than they first appeared.

  2. Bob-kat : That is so true.We really dont know all the shades that exist in a person till we know them closely. And even then sometimes, years after knowing them you still discover new shades.

  3. Maybe my purple and your magenta can make a new hue, that doesn't have a name yet.

    So true.
    Except the octarine part.
You can only find that in wizards.

  7. I always wanted the 64-color box with sharpener. Never got it. I wonder if that's why my expectations are still low today? You are so magenta by the way!

  8. Somewhere joe: What if I want a flaming red? ;-)

Niall: The colurs that already exist drive me insane--why would I go looking for elusive octarine?:-)

    Freelance cynic:I never met a wizard and neverlooked--so i dont know! :-)

    Roshan:Thanks :-)

    Katherine: I thought I was a flaming gold :-)

  9. You WoW me, Ps. I have never looked at it this way. But there is that expression: True Colors. I try to show mine as truly as I possibly can, careful not to disguise my hues. My problem is in having ignored some colors in the other person that I knew I could not incorporate into any canvas. And I paid the price. What is that price? Knowledge. Wisdom. Worthy investments. Thank you, sister of mine.

  14. Gawpo: We think we are showing our true colurs. But what appears red to us may appear crimson to another.Therein lies the whole contradiction or conflict or difference in approach or whatever you call it.Your nephew has been coaxed and reminded to write--but he just wants to run out to play:-)

Paul: I love that :-)Have sent you a mail :-)

Diyadear:Very true. Many a time we dont realise what we had until its gone.Health for instance.

Misti: Most people have many shades. That person is showing you only the grey.Maybe he has the opposite of what Paul has-- CFS( colour fear syndrome)
Even after trying hard, if gray is all you get--well there are plenty of other boxes of colour :-) And they can be exciting. You only have to open your mind and ----look ;-)

Know what, the crayon box analogy was perfect !Most people have , i think 3 colors..and have to dicover the endless possibilities. Thanks for putting it so succinctly!and also for reminding me that each second gone is irretrievable.

Why do we even want to look for different colors in other people. What about those who are color blind???? Having different colors is just part of nature, look at it and just enjoy it. Having a feeling associated with it, then you may as well say good bye to "unconditional" in day to day life.

  20. Oh, yes, finding people who are more than the 8 primary colors is hard but wonderful when you do. Sometimes people think they are just a plain blue or green or pink but if you hang around them long enough you can color their world and they become periwinkles, limes, crimsons, mallards and golds.
Doesn't always work, but when it does it's amazing.

  21. Tim: I agree.Colour is so important in life.

Deepak:Thank you.Which graphic reminded you of malgudi days? (I used to LOVE that t.v.serial)The poster in your blog--or this picture?

    Bharathi:You are welcome--ANYTIME ;-)

Annonymous: Do you know even the blind can 'feel' colours and even see some of them?I was amazed when I got to know (thanks to misti for the info)We dont consciuosly look for colours in other people. That is what attracts us subconsciuosly. It is a proven law in the animal kingdm.Havent you heard of bright colours that many animals use to attract potential mates? And the way some insects use colour to avoid being eaten?(a survival skill)
Mostly it is those people who do not feel much emotion (say autistic people) who do not associate colours with feelings. You may be colour blind, but you need to tell at least the red from the green--else you are going to get a lot of traffic tickets, my friend!!

Most of the problems in this world are because people have different shades and look for different shades in every aspect of life. If only there was black and white. One of the reasons why I always prefer a black and white photograph and yes they don't disfigure as the color photographs do and yet give us immense joy.

  24. Annonymous: life would have been so boring if there was only black and white my friend.
