A food post. Life's little blessings

It is rarely that I post things about what I cook. And very very rarely have I shared photos of stuff I cook. Many people who meet me are surprised to know that I haven't hired a cook, and I do all the cooking myself. My husband too cooks, and one of the things we love doing together, is cooking.

Today was one of those days, where I ended up making  some  stuff which turned  out YUMMILICIOUS.

Carrot Idlis for breakfast.  You can find the recipe HERE

I served it with some coconut -coriander chutney. It is something my grandmother used to make, and the recipe has been passed down the family. I love the feeling of nostalgia, warmth and comfort this brings.

And then, in the afternoon, I baked a banana-walnut cake. I used THIS recipe.

That turned out really well. It tasted divine and the the aroma wafting across the home, brings such a happy, warm feeling. This is what love smells like  :)

Sometimes, we forget to be grateful for life's little things.
I think it is important that we are.

Do you cook? What food brings you comfort? Is there a recipe that hs been passed down the generations?
Tell me in my comment box. (I have a selfish reason for asking this too. What you share here, might end up in a novel :)  [ Yes, I have already started working on my next book. ]

Will post again soon. Till then, don't forget to be grateful for life's little blessings.

  4. Oh wow! What a yummy post. Carrot idlis sound really delicious and I must say that Banana cakes are one of my favorite cakes to bake. My mom does most of the cooking, but when it comes to baking cakes, cookies and other desserts, then I take over. There is nothing more satisfying than baking a cake and having the aroma spread throughout the house. I normally refer blogs for recipes relating to baking. One of my favorite is divyascookbook.com The recipes are really amazing and you will feel like making something just a few seconds after reading the recipe. Thanks again for the Carrot Idlis and Cake recipe. Edible Garden is another blog which I follow. :-)

  8. It was wonderful going through this post mam. Especially the baking part took me flashback, when i tried baking vanilla cake on the eve of my b'day last year. Yes, i baked a b'day cake for myself!!! And that too for the first time in my life in 30 years!! Honestly though it didn't turned out so good, but the sheer aroma (wafting through the entire house during the baking process) and the feeling of having created something for yourself made it a worthwhile experience.

I enjoy cooking and i think i'm gonna try my hand at making Dosa very soon as i love Dosa (but have never made myself).

Truly inspired to know that you do all the cooking yourself. You are an epitome of multi-tasker.

You are a blessing to many people like me. I regularly visit your blog and get inspired by your post every time.

  9. Preethi mam,
You have come up with a health and attractive recipe, i.e, carrot idlis. Usually idly is the most boring of all south Indian breakfasts( for me),but these seems to be attractive because of the colour. The chutney seems to be yummy.
Coming to me, I don't cook yet, but I am theoretically well versed with all the recipes. I love eating crisp dosa with coconut chutney.

  10. Hello ma'am..so happy to see your new post!Inspiring as always. The idli and cake looks yummy.
Reading and cooking are two things which i love doing. But unfortunately i can't bake cakes.Everytime i try baking something it ends up getting burnt..I've tried it many many times and am still trying. Will definitely try this cake too..God knows when i will be able to bake a perfect cake..But i must say my parents are never tired of eating my burnt cakes. But i do make amazing paneer tikkas..And coming to the next part of the question-there is this chutney called 'ulli chammandhi' in malayalam which is basically a onion chutney.I guess you might have tried it ma'am. My paternal grandmother taught it to my mom and i learnt it from my mom.It is very delicious and tastes best with idli and dosa.
    Bye ma'am..take care,have a good night.
Waiting eagerly for your next book and your next post as well.

  11. Hello ma'am though we have had email exchanges, please consider me to be a silent admirer of your work. Since the topic is food I would wish to share my experience. I belong to Karnataka ( north karnataka) and recently got married in Mysore. One of the functions after the wedding was a special Pooja at the same venue as the reception, arranged by my in-laws. Since they were making the arrangements, I had no clue as to how the food will be or what will be the menu. Rest of the details I had checked but as there was too much to do , this tiny detail got left out. I was also nervous as we would be the last to eat for the reception and I had invited all my friends too for the function. Being new to Mysore I did not have any food reviews from the venue though my husband assured me it would be good. After the pooja in the afternoon we all headed for lunch. The long Pooja and the worry about food at the reception in the evening (same venue) had made me extra hungry. It was a simple traditional South Indian style sitting lunch. The moment I put the first bite of food in my mouth, it felt very soul nourishing. The whole fare was yummy but there was something about that meal I can't put my finger onto. In my head I just call it a 'Soul Satisfying' meal. I don't know whether it was my hunger or the taste. But the meal nourished my soul for sure.
