A hindi verse for you. (Blog marathon post 16)

जो बीत गई सो बात गई
जीवन में एक सितारा था
माना वह बेहद प्यारा था
वह डूब गया तो डूब गया
अम्बर के आनन को देखो
कितने इसके तारे टूटे
कितने इसके प्यारे छूटे
जो छूट गए फिर कहाँ मिले
पर बोलो टूटे तारों पर
कब अम्बर शोक मनाता है
जो बीत गई सो बात गई

        ----Harivansh Rai Bacchan

The above words are one of the best pieces of poetry and philosophy I have ever come across. My non-hindi speaking friends will have to excuse (or use google translate)

These powerful lines reminded me of what my dad used to say to me in my mother tongue , the literal translation of which is 'If you die today, tomorrow two'.
What it means is 'If you die today, today is 1st day of your death, tomorrow is second day, day-after is third day and so on'. It means that you should never look back--exactly the same sentiment expressed in the poetry above.

So if a terrible tragedy has occurred with you, lament over it but only for a brief while. Once you are done feeling sad, forge ahead and move on.

What matters is not what was or what will be, but this present moment, where you can focus on all the joys that you have. The fact that you are breathing itself is a cause to be grateful for. Think about it.

  4. Good Morning Preeti! This comes at the moment when exactly I was comparing my past with the present and was thinking that past was beautiful instead of appreciating what I currently have! Thank you so much for these lines and making me understand the value of things I have! Hope to be a better or could say satisfied person from now on! Thanks again.. :-)

  9. Very touching and moving lines by the great poet. I wish it were so easy to follow. Thanks Prreti for reminding us of our short-lived life. But, alas, we are so vain and arrogant!

  10. #InspirationalPoetry..!!! One of my bestfriends once told me: There is NO future in the Past. What has gone by, why to waste today in thinking of all that stuff. Instead live in present and make the best out of it..!!!

  12. Yes, this is very true. I had to use Google Translator to understand the meaning. So beautiful and touching. Thanks for posting. We should be grateful for so many day to day things we have which we might have taken for granted. Like breathing!
