How was your weekend?

Some weekends leave you feeling that you have ‘achieved something’. (even if it is something as non-descript as finally organising your over stuffed wardrobe which you have been meaning to do for weeks) This week end was one such for me.

No, I did not organize my wardrobe. I belong to that category of people who firmly believe that an organized wardrobe is a sign of wasted life.(Sorry—but there is so much more to do than keeping your wardrobe pristine clean, all the time .I agree it comes as naturally as breathing to some of us. But the rest of us struggle with keeping it neat.)

Am digressing from the topic here. To come back to the point, on Saturday, I had one of my thinking workshops, which was great fun. The kids LOVED it. One of the thinking questions was “If you had a magic mirror like in the story ‘snow-white’ what questions would you ask it?” The answers given were really interesting. One 6 year old child said she would ask the mirror how many balls there are in the world. Upon which, my 9 year old promptly corrected her and said “you have to clarify what balls—cricket balls, foot balls, soccer balls. Don’t just say balls” and he gave me a knowing wink (Oh yes--he thinks he is a ‘big-boy’ now!) Another thinking question was that they had to think of all the ways, in which they would help Little Bo-beep to find her sheep. The answers were again very imaginative—ranging from organising a search party with friends to putting electronic tags on the sheep to going up in a satellite and spotting them on a radar. Children are so imaginative. Sadly, most education systems kill it.

On Sunday we went trekking with another family. Some time back I had blogged about an amazing meeting with a fellow blogger. This time it was a planned meeting and we went on a trek, along with our families. The drive was breathtakingly beautiful. Awe inspiring and picturesque. I promise to post the photos in my next post.

  1. Hey cool, good to know that the workshop went well. Great answers, u r right, kids are so imaginative; it’s the education that kills it. Made me remember the "Little Prince", where the narrator as a kid drew a boa constrictor eating an elephant, but all the grown up thought it looked like a hat. Only the little prince knew what it really was because he was a kid and used his imagination rather than logical reasoning like adults. :)

  2. misti: Worse would have been if the Little prince's Art teacher gave him a 'C' or a 'D' for a drawing of a 'hat'!! Seriously--It makes me cringe when i see some 'well knowing and well meaning adults' MURDERING creativity in young children.

  3. That must have been an interesting lessons for the kids. I believe i would enjoy it if i was sitting in or being apart of it. lol..:P

And lol @ ya 9 year old's comment. How cute..:D

***Children are so imaginative. Sadly, most education systems kill it.

Yupz. I have to agree with that. And I honestly find it really sad. There is just this thing about being too structural sometimes. Its limits the creativity and puts barriers towards thinking out of the box. I can't help but feel annoyed by it at times.

    Cheers PS!:)

  4. Sweetstickychewy: You said it!in fact the 'thinking activity' in my workshops is called "out of the box" Yes--and it is fun for the adults and kids alike! :-)

  7. Hi PS.

I was just thinking tiz morning. I caught a movie recently called "The Freedom Writers". I loved the movie and something that would be in my best movies collection. You might be interested in checking it out. Its about a teacher who taught kids/teenagers to express & believe in themselves. Hilary Swank is starring in that movie. I love it much! IF u do check it out. Hope u will enjoy it too.:)

    Good Day!

Children are so imaginative. and can say the most insightful things and thinds that adults could not get away with. They just say whats on their mind, we as adults are jugded so much and ou world is politicall correct ( especially in the UK ) we not not even allow to say Baa Baa black sheep any more for fear of upsetting one part of the commnity. (for those who dont know its the first line of nursey rhyme)
Any way thanks for sharing and thinaks for reading my comments

  11. You are exactly right. I can remember being very puzzled throughout school as I was always criticised for having a 'wild imagination'. I was often marked down for it and bit by bit they sought they to curb it. Needless to say I resisted it but I am sure years of this had an adverse affect on me. Imagination should be celebrated.

BTW- my wardrobe is a disgrace! :)

  12. bob_kat:My wardrobe is usually messy (but not dirty). But strangely when I'm upset I like to tidy it up! What a pity that the school you went to instead of encouraging you, wanted you to confirm.Redcently J.K.Rowling's english teacher was quoted as saying he was glad that she did not listen to him!

I did not mean to make fun of people who do have clean wardrobes.I apologise to all if it sounded that way.

My first time here. Had fun reading your blog!

"I belong to that category of people who firmly believe that an organized wardrobe is a sign of wasted life"
LOL! Well put. If you look at my wardrobe (are men even allowed to call it a wardrobe?) you will realize that I don't waste a second of my life, vouched for by the piles of my clothes. :)
