A butterfly instead

The actual size of this painting that I did very recently is just 15cms x 10 cms.It took me about three hours to complete.I suppose I could tell you about Monarch butterflies. That they are known for their migratory skills. That some groups of Monarchs migrate for over 2,000 miles during August-October, flying from Canada and the USA to overwinter, in coastal southern California, to the transvolcanic mountains of central Mexico; That the life span of the adult Monarch varies, depending on the season in which it emerged from the pupa and whether or not it belongs to a migratory group of Monarchs. Adults that emerged in early summer have the shortest life spans and live for about two to five weeks. Those that emerged in late summer survive over the winter months. The migratory Monarchs, which emerge from the pupa in late summer and then migrate south, live a much longer life, about 8-9 months.

Instead, I’ll leave you with the lyrics of this song that strike me deep.

Butterflies Instead
By K's Choice

I lock the door and lock my head
And dream of butterflies instead
The beauty of their colored wings
The trees, the grass and pretty things
Imagination fills the void of my existence
Daddy says "I love you girl, it's not your fault
Your mom and me don't get along"
I know he's lying, I know there's no such thing as
Inexplicable I hear, forget, this world in bed

And suddenly the sun comes up
That's when my pets all come alive
They cheer me up and tell me
Everything's alright
Stuffed animals are always right
My favorite song, my favorite show
I wonder if they even know
Or if they care or if they even notice
I am standing there
I want my pets to come alive
And cheer me up and tell me
Everything's alright
Stuffed animals are always right
Everything's alright
Stuffed animals are always right
Alright...
My eyes all red, the baby's wet
And someone has to get that phone
I want my pets to come alive and
Cheer me up and tell me
Alright...
I lock the door and lock my head
And dream of butterflies instead

  2. Great lyrics, very vivid. I saw K's choice live once, I really like her voice.
It's amazing how such small vulnerable fragile things travel so far away...completely amazing!
    Your paintings have great colours!

You really are very talented, both as a painter, and a mother.

Your mummy wisdom on my blog certainly made me think.

  4. Nice little painting!..but what an odd song..the only 'stuffed animal' I like is a roast chicken!Ha!..and that will always be right to me!
But seriously..you are right..animals bring us a sense of perspective..cause us to care and consider....now I've just gone and remembered your little kitten..animals put you intouch with your feelings!

  5. Katherine: Thank you.Have made many 'realistic' ones like these--but it is the other 'arty' ones that are more imaginative--therefore difficult! :-)

Diya:Thank you :)But why did you smile after saying mice painting? Was that sarcastic (cant help wondering you know!)

Devil Mood; There is so much depth in these lyrics.I havent heard K's choice, but the lyrics really moved me.Thank you for appreciating my painting.

    Freelance cynic:Thank you.Thank you!At least someone thinks I'm wise ;-)

Niall: Maybe you didnt understand the song. The song is sung by a lttle girl whose parents are fighting. She hates the noise and the loud angry voices, and is very disturbed about it.But there is nothing she can do.So, she pretends that her stuffed animals are alive. She locks out everything--and thinks of butterflies. In the last part of the song,--maybe she is an adult and she still does the same, when life gets unbearable.I specifically liked the lines :I lock the door and lock my head--and dream of butterflies instead"
I was so moved by the helplessness of that little girl, and her ay of coping.

  10. Bharathi is correct: The butterfly is gorgeous. And the words of the song have deep meaning for any child whose parents fought. A child has to go somewhere. Butterflies are a good place. Joining them on their migration is a good place. Excellent post, Ms. Ps. As always.

  12. Lovely picture. Butterflies are so beautiful and fragile.

I liked the song too. I was convinced that my stuffed animals were alive when I was small.

  16. I grew up on the east coast of the U.S. One autumn I was walking through the woods near the beach and a monarch butterfly landed on my sleeve. Then another. And another. I stood absolutely still, I was so amazed. They stayed on me flapping their wings ever so slowly. I heard a rustling sound to the right of me and looked up to see a tree totally covered in butterflies. They flitted from tree to tree and to me and then back to the main tree and then at some secret butterfly signal they all took off at once in a beautiful cloud of black and orange. I stood in the middle of it, not moving, just drinking in every second of what I knew would be a life memory. The following autumns I would walk by that area every day but I never got to see it again.
